Sacha Baron Cohen’s New Show Comes Complete with Conspiracy Website: Truthbrary
Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr. is an InfoWars-style character played by Sacha Baron Cohen in his new Showtime series Who is America?
The fictional Ruddick runs a handy little website (which actually exists) detailing popular conspiracy theories promoted by truthers over the past several decades—everything from the CIA fostering rock and roll music as social control to the moon landing hoax to the Satanic elite running Hollyweird.
In fact, the catalog of conspiracies is quite complete and has apparently been quietly building for some months now. Billy Wayne (apparently he has a PhD) also runs a clever Twitter account at @BillyWRuddick and has a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Truthbrary/
The website, Truthbrary, appears to be maintained regularly, with new conspiracies still being added:
http://TRUTHBRARY.ORG was created by Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick for the American people. We must take control of our facts and our truth. #StopFAKENews
Forced myself to watch sad, irrelephant Sasha Cohens’ show WHO IS AMERICA, which i was DUPED into apearing. Garbage, apart from Patriot who slipped this clip past #fakenews Showtime sensors. Finally a solution to bad guys with guns! https://t.co/XFuHYplma3 #boycottSashacohen

Hot Wings in Academia: YouTube Show about Eating Hot Wings “Creates, Maintains & Manipulates Inequitable Gender Hierarchies” & If You Disagree—Misogyny
In June 2018, University of Tulsa Assistant Professor of Media Studies Emily Contois published the following scholarly article: “The Spicy Spectacular: Food, Gender, and Celebrity on Hot Ones.” (Feminist Media Studies. Commentary and Criticism: Food Media Special Issue. Published Online June 7, 2018. DOI: 10.1080/14680777.2018.1478690.) Soon thereafter, Twitter’s New Peer Review, an account that monitors academic publications and calls out studies lacking in solid evidence-based scholarship, shared the contents of the Dr. Contois’ article online. Subsequently, the study was picked up and lampooned by various media outlets, including Breitbart, The Daily Wire and The National Review.
Apparently, Kevin Hart’s appearance on the show is the most popular episode:
The subject of Contois’ article is a popular YouTube show where celebrity guests eat spicy hot wings with differing levels of hot sauce, often tearing up, laughing, swearing, and answering interview questions all at once. It troubled Dr. Contois that in the history of the show, only eleven women have appeared, which amounted to about 10 percent of guests.
Contois’ thesis: “My analysis of Hot Ones informs feminist media studies, as it reveals how this YouTube show creates, maintains and manipulates inequitable gender hierarchies through the interrelated performances of gender, food consumption, and celebrity.”
The author then goes on to throw around assertions that shows like this reinforce power hierarchies because women are supposed to like/eat dainty food with restraint, that female chefs are often depicted preparing comfort food, whereas men eating hot food reinforces the idea that they are tough dudes and fearless risk takers. She says chicken wings and hot foods are masculine coded foods. As evidence, she supports the masculine coding of certain foods by citing another of her articles about Super Bowl food and sports bar fare.
Look, you get the idea. She even questions her own thesis about the show being biased against female guests by saying maybe women don’t want to come on the show because eating and talking are not conventionally feminine but doesn’t really follow up on that.
But here’s the rub: after so much media ridicule of her academic study, she is trolled on Twitter and some of the comments are kind of nasty, while some are just simply saying this cannot pass for scholarship—it’s not good scholarship. So how does Dr. Contois address this criticism of the validity of her research?
She doubles down—she writes an article titled “I Was Trolled – Here’s Why I’m Turning It into a Teaching Opportunity” where she then says it all boils down to misogyny—not bad scholarship. She writes:
It’s both ironic and fitting that my essay happened to be published in Feminist Media Studies in a commentary section on feminism and food media within a special issue on online misogyny.3 In the issue’s introduction, editors Debbie Ging and Eugenia Siapera adopt a cultural rather than legal approach to online gender-based violence, writing:
…misogyny, which may not involve violence but almost always entails some form of harm; either directly in the form of psychological, professional, reputational, or, in some cases, physical harm; or indirectly, in the sense that it makes the internet a less equal, less safe, or less inclusive space for women and girls.
I Was Trolled – Here’s Why I’m Turning It into a Teaching Opportunity
She adds:
I’m very relieved I haven’t faced real threats, yet, but many folks attacked by online misogyny do. Amanda Hess’s 2014 essay, “Why Women Aren’t Welcome on the Internet” and Amnesty International’s 2018 report on Twitter both document such occurrences. A national UK study published in 2017 offers additional evidence and explores “online abuse of this kind as an extension of offline gender relations.”
Her rebuttal never addresses any weaknesses in her academic paper. It doesn’t look at shows like Fear Factor, where both men and women ate yucky stuff or any other YouTube hot stuff challenges. It just doesn’t qualify any of the conclusions she draws. It simply condemns critics as being misogynists who like to be mean to women online—people she even classifies as “trolls,” not academic scholars or critics in their own right, so why pay them any mind?
How about we just stick to science and not pull the misogyny card, feminists? It dismisses all rational debate and silences critics over and over again and reinforces the idea that women are just too darn fragile to handle legitimate criticism or defend their work if they believe it to be valid. Playing the misogyny card and complaining about mean old trolls just isn’t going to cut it anymore. Evidence based studies matter–I for one want my work to be judged on merit–and I don’t plan to act like a delicate flower when I make a mistake.
By the way, my Master’s Degree was from the University of Tulsa, and it is a good school. This is a bad look.
Former Slaves, Known as Creek Freedmen, Sue for Reinstatement as Creek Citizens with Full Benefits

A lawsuit filed in Federal Court on July 20, 2018, names defendants RYAN ZINKE, Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior; UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR; and JAMES FLOYD, Principal Chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, in His Official Capacity.
According to court documents, plaintiffs are individuals and a collection of persons whose direct lineal ancestors were listed on the final Dawes Rolls of 1906 as Creek Nation Freedmen (“Creek Freedmen” or “Freedmen”) and citizens of the Muscogee Creek Nation (“MCN” or “Creek Nation”). Plaintiffs include descendants of (1) individuals who were enslaved by MCN, (2) Creeks of “African Descent,” (3) free “Africans” living as citizens of the Creek Nation, and/or (4) “mixed blood” Creek Nation citizens who were listed as Creek Freedmen on the Dawes Rolls (collectively “Descendants” or “Creek Freedmen Descendants”).
In 1866, the Creek Treaty between the United States and the MCN, the Freedmen and Freedmen Descendants, stated that regardless of their “blood” status “shall have and enjoy all the rights and privileges of native citizens” of the MCN.
On or about August 18, 1975, the MCN through its National Council, submitted to
DOI a draft constitution (“Draft Constitution”) that, among other things, contained express provisions which (1) stripped individuals on the 1906 Creek Freedmen Rolls and their then-living lineal descendants of their MCN citizenship; and (2) prevented the unborn lineal descendants of individuals who were enrolled on the 1906 Creek Freedmen Rolls from becoming citizens of MCN.
On October 29, 1977, then-MCN Principal Chief Claud Cox, a proponent of the new constitution, admitted that one of the express goals of the Draft Constitution was to strip Freedmen and Creek Freedmen Descendants of their MCN citizenship and rights stating:
“When you go back to the old [1867] Constitution, you are licked before you start; because it doesn’t talk about Indians, it talks about CITIZENS of the CREEK NATION. When you got down to the Allotment time, there were more that was non-Indians or half-blood or less, who outnumbered the full blood, all of these totaled about 11,000, and there were only 18,000 on the entire Roll; so there was only 9,000 above One-half blood. That’s the reason, they lost control; the FULLBLOOD lost control. That’s what we’re fighting, this blood quantum, trying to get back and let the people control because under the old Constitution, you’ve lost before you ever started. There were three FREEDMAN bands that would outnumber you today as citizens. So if we want to keep the INDIAN in control we’ve got to take a good look at this thing and get us a Constitution that will keep the Creek Indian in Control.” (MCN National Council Minutes, October 29, 1977)
Upon the dubious ratification of the 1979 Constitution, and with DOI’s approval, the MCN illegally declared that all Freedmen were not entitled to MCN citizenship and would no longer be recognized or allowed to be citizens of MCN. The MCN also began to summarily deny Creek Freedmen and their Descendants applications for citizenship.
Between 1979 to the present, eligible Freedmen and Creek Freedmen Descendants applied for MCN citizenships and were summarily denied. Oftentimes Freedmen applicants would be informed of their denial via a form letter from the Citizenship Board, which would include some version of the following language taken from a May 31, 2002 letter from MCN to a Creek Freedmen applicant:
We are returning your letter and any other documents submitted for enrollment into the Muscogee (Creek) Nation because in checking the Dawes Commission Rolls, your ancestors were enrolled on the Creek Freedmen Rolls. If you will note from the copy you submitted there is no blood quantum listed because they are not Creek by Blood. When slavery was abolished following the Civil War, Treaties were negotiated with the Five-Civilized Tribes; the Choctaw, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole Nations. The treaties conferred citizenship in the tribes on the negroes who had been held in slavery by the tribes. Such citizens were referred to as ‘Freedmen.’

Duping Delight, Cheater’s High, Sneaky Thrills: When Duping Becomes an Aphrodisiac
Spouses of serial cheaters have observed anecdotally that cheating isn’t always just about sex—it’s often combined with a thrill of secrecy and risk, forbidden and illicit encounters and finding pleasure in manipulative deceit. Some of the cheaters seem to really get off on the thrill of duping their significant others.
Paul Ekman, a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, served two years as First Lieutenant and chief psychologist at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Later, he worked as a professor of psychology at the UCSF medical school. In 1967, Dr. Ekman began to study deception. His 1992 book Telling Lies prompted national and regional law enforcement groups to ask for help.
In Telling Lies, Ekman coined the term “duping delight.” Ekman notes, “Lying can also produce positive feelings. The lie may be viewed as an accomplishment, which feels good. The liar may feel excitement, either when anticipating the challenge or during the very moment of lying, when success is not yet certain. Afterward there may be the pleasure that comes with relief, pride in the achievement, or feelings of smug contempt toward the target. Duping delight refers to all or any of these feelings that can, if not concealed, betray the deceit.”
A wife found this text message from her cheating husband to his affair partner:
“Remember me trying to talk every night with (my wife) just inches away? I just knew I was gonna be caught. If she had seen some of those early ones!!!! Oooh. Juicy.” (lots of heart emojis)
Ekman observes that “duping delight” can be made even more delicious if the liar has an audience of some sort—someone who he or she can brag to about his accomplishments.
Ekman writes, “The presence of others who know what is going on can also increase the likelihood of duping delight. The audience need not be present, as long as it is attentive and appreciative.”
From a spouse: “I don’t know how many people actually knew about my husband’s final exit affair. I know of at least one—yet another woman—who he was clearly trying to impress with his skillful deceit and probably trying to also signal his imagined sexual prowess and his availability. He would message her on his special burner phone and keep her up to date on his love affair. He would also send her suggestive messages like ‘wouldn’t it be funny if we ended up together after all these years?’”
Perhaps most troubling of all, deceiving the person who you have spent years telling he or she can trust you, rely on you, feel safe and secure with you—may be the most thrilling accomplishment of all. “Duping a totally trusting victim may be especially delicious, indulging enjoyable feelings of contempt,” observes Ekman.
A spouse: “My husband staged a ‘fake break-up’ with his ‘girlfriend’ (not exactly a girl–she was almost eligible for Medicare) in a text he knew I would see. He said he was ending his affair and going to concentrate on mending his ways and working on his marriage. The “girl”friend was in on the deception (the thrill of humiliating another woman got her off too) and afterwards the girlfriend immediately messaged him on Facebook, saying she was going to cost him a lot more money to maintain than I was. These two cheaters found pleasure in deceiving me, in degrading me, humiliating me. And my husband of more than 30 years, the father of my children, did not care that she derided me or hurt me. He did not try to shield me from her cruelty as well as his own. It’s hard to understand the privilege they feel and the sexual excitement they feel in manipulating and exploiting another human. In my darker moments, I imagine them laughing about how clever that little ploy must have made them feel, how superior, how in control, all at my expense. I will never understand how they live with themselves. I guess I don’t really want to understand—I don’t even want to try and place myself in that mindset. And, to be honest, it wasn’t just me they enjoyed duping. They also celebrated getting one over on her husband and her ex-boyfriend (a previous affair partner she claimed she was in the process of dumping.) She would screenshot her other boyfriend’s sad text messages and send them to my husband and they would share snide, superior comments about what a sad, sloppy drunk he was.”
In 2013, a study was released which backed up Ekman’s theory of the “duping delight.
Titled “The Cheater’s High: The Unexpected Affective Benefits of Unethical Behavior,” researchers found that cheaters experience a certain giddiness associated with the thrill of getting away with something, particularly if it was forbidden. When subjects successfully got away with unethical behavior, they felt a sense of cleverness, accomplishment, advantage and control. The cheaters took pride in bypassing rules and experienced what might be called a “sneaky thrill.”

Teaching Evolution Montessori Style: A Timeline of the Universe
Maria Montessori devised certain grand lessons that were impressionistic in nature—that is, the lesson is not meant to nail down specifics, but to allow a child to see the enormity of the universe and the child’s place within that universe.
I happened to run across a lesson I did with my Montessori students—ages 9 to 12—which was made ultimately made into a 20-foot long properly scaled strip depicting the origin of our universe from the Big Bang right up until just before humans began to inhabit the earth.
Isn’t the art magnificent?

Basketball Matches Held in Pyongyang; Friendly Inter-Korean Games First Since 2003
PYONGYANG/SEOUL, July 4 (Joint Press Corps-Yonhap) — South and North Korean basketball players played two friendly matches in Pyongyang on Wednesday amid a thaw in inter-Korean relations.
The games were played in the afternoon at Ryugyong Chung Ju-yung Gymnasium between a “peace” team and a “prosperity” team made up of a mixture of North and South Korean players. The women’s teams played first followed by the men’s. They were part of four planned games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
The women’s “prosperity” team managed to win 103-102. Ro Suk-yong of the North was key to the victory, scoring 18 points.
The men’s game was tied at 102-102. With less than a second left on the clock, North Korea’s Choe Sung-ho hit a game-tying three-pointer for the “prosperity” team. Another North Korean Won Yun-sik, meanwhile, had the game-high 17 points for “peace” team.
This is the fourth time that the two Koreas have held friendly basketball matches. The last such games were played in October 2003.
The event was arranged after high-level officials from the two Koreas met in June to discuss sports exchanges in line with the spirit of the April 27 summit, where their leaders promised to expand cross-border exchanges and contacts.
Inter-Korean relations have been thawing since early this year when the North sent athletes to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics hosted by the South.
The rapprochement led to summit meetings between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in April and May.
The North’s leader, known to be an avid fan of basketball, was not seen at the gymnasium. It is unclear whether he will attend the other planned matches.
The delegation is to return home on Friday.
