New CDC analysis shows steep and sustained increases in STDs in recent years

Latest U.S. data reveal threat to multiple populations

Nearly 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were diagnosed in the United States in 2017, according to preliminary data released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the National STD Prevention Conference in Washington, D.C. This surpassed the previous record set in 2016 by more than 200,000 cases and marked the fourth consecutive year of sharp increases in these sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

The CDC analysis of STD cases reported for 2013 and preliminary data for 2017 shows steep, sustained increases:

Gonorrhea diagnoses increased 67 percent overall (from 333,004 to 555,608 cases according to preliminary 2017 data) and nearly doubled among men (from 169,130 to 322,169). Increases in diagnoses among women — and the speed with which they are increasing — are also concerning, with cases going up for the third year in a row (from 197,499 to 232,587).

Primary and secondary syphilis diagnoses increased 76 percent (from 17,375 to 30,644 cases). Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) made up almost 70 percent of primary and secondary syphilis cases where the gender of the sex partner is known in 2017. Primary and secondary syphilis are the most infectious stages of the disease.

Chlamydia remained the most common condition reported to CDC. More than 1.7 million cases were diagnosed in 2017, with 45 percent among 15- to 24-year-old females.

“We are sliding backward,” said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., M.P.H, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. “It is evident the systems that identify, treat, and ultimately prevent STDs are strained to near-breaking point.”

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are curable with antibiotics, yet most cases go undiagnosed and untreated — which can lead to severe adverse health effects that include infertility, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth in infants, and increased HIV risk. Prior studies suggest a range of factors may contribute to STD increases, including socioeconomic factors like poverty, stigma, and discrimination; and drug use.

Continued concerns about antibiotic resistant gonorrhea

The threat of untreatable gonorrhea persists in the United States, and reports of antibiotic resistant gonorrhea abroad have only reinforced those concerns. Over the years, gonorrhea has become resistant to nearly every class of antibiotics used to treat it, except to ceftriaxone, the only remaining highly effective antibiotic to treat gonorrhea in the United States.

In 2015, CDC began recommending health care providers prescribe a single shot of ceftriaxone accompanied by an oral dose of azithromycin to people diagnosed with gonorrhea. Azithromycin was added to help delay the development of resistance to ceftriaxone.

Emerging resistance to ceftriaxone has not been seen since the dual therapy approach was implemented, and there has not yet been a confirmed treatment failure in the United States when using this recommended therapy.

New CDC findings released today, however, show that emerging resistance to azithromycin is now on the rise in laboratory testing — with the portion of samples that showed emerging resistance to azithromycin increasing from 1 percent in 2013 to more than 4 percent in 2017.

The finding adds concerns that azithromycin-resistant genes in some gonorrhea could crossover into strains of gonorrhea with reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone — and that a strain of gonorrhea may someday surface that does not respond to ceftriaxone.

“We expect gonorrhea will eventually wear down our last highly effective antibiotic, and additional treatment options are urgently needed,” said Gail Bolan, M.D., director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “We can’t let our defenses down — we must continue reinforcing efforts to rapidly detect and prevent resistance as long as possible.”

A renewed commitment from health care providers — who are encouraged to make STD screening and timely treatment a standard part of medical care, especially for the populations most affected — is an important component to reverse current trends.

When Sam Harris Fans Attack—or Do They? Nice Mangos Speaks

Photo courtesy US Air Force, US Federal Government.

NOTE: This is my summary of Kevin Logan’s podcast featuring guest Nice Mangos–these are NOT my opinions.

Blogger and podcast host Nice Mangos appeared on a podcast today run by Kevin Logan to discuss, according to Logan’s episode description, the following: “The ‘intellectual dark web’ is a hive of scum and villainy, and they show themselves as such when facing any kind of criticism. Their vicious attacks on Eiynah Nicemangos (of the polite conversations podcast), when Harris retweeted a hit piece against her, were truly disgusting.”

Nice Mangos introduces herself as a Pakistani Canadian blogger and podcaster. She is an ex-Muslim and refers to growing up in Saudi Arabia. She is a former fan of Sam Harris but now says she no longer respects him intellectually and plans to spend the rest of her days criticizing Harris, his cult, the “bullshit” IDW and their cultists, in that order.

It is worth noting that while Nice Mangos apparently suffered from terrible dog piling by this Harris cult, the evidence seemed to be scarce. She claimed there were some private messages and some isolated tweets we probably missed but we should trust her that it was just an awful barrage and that the dogs in the pile were rabid. Logan did share a screenshot of one tweet by someone named Wayne Spencer but it didn’t directly apply to anything to do with Harris or the IDW.

So, for the rest of the time the two made pretty sweeping judgments condemning—well—a tremendous amount of folks—some by name, some by “they.” I’ll just give you a sampling and save your some time:

Damo (@concretemilk) who wrote a blog post that set off Nice Mangos

Link here:

Doubling Down

is a mere troll. His blog post is old. Harris should never had shared it. It was a hit piece.

Sam’s cultists are like Trump supporters and if you made a Venn diagram of the two groups you would have a circle.

Why do “they” support causes like Lindsay Shepherd when we need to be worried about bigger things like Trump?

Sam Harris supports Rubin Report and Quillete so that makes him hypocritical, more or less. (Apparently they gleaned this from Patreon.)

The IDW is a dumb name and the pictures in the New York Times of the “dark” were so ironic as they are not dark themselves. Also, they looked like they were jerking off trees in the photos. (That little gem was courtesy of Kevin Logan)

The IDW is basically a poor example of humanism and they are not rational or skeptical at all. In fact, the IDW has such a veneer of credibility that it attracts mere pseudo-intellectuals rather than true intellectuals and they really don’t have the capacity to understand what it is they’re getting themselves into because—well, they’re kind of dumb.

Stephen Knight is a big “fuck you” from Kevin because Knight dared to suggest the “hit piece” by the “troll” Damo was balanced and fair.

Sam is trying to restart the debate about scientific racism which will thrill his cultists because they’re all pro-racism and want to maintain the status quo.

Sam only “censored” Christian Picciolini to protect his patron revenue because they’ll stop contributing to him if he speaks too harshly against the right, the alt-light, or the alt-right. The Sam cult likes racism more than anti-racism. Sam is gaslighting us and he’s dishonest through and through.

Oh, and he was mean to Ezra Klein when he shared private emails.

Gad Saad is a fascinating liar who runs around with anti-semites.

Jordan Peterson and Gad Saad were on the stage with Faith Goldy and she doesn’t deserve a platform because she pals around with Nazis. Jordan Peterson is a symptom of the poison at the root of atheism (I don’t even think Peterson is an atheist?).

There’s no happy and cheerful ending to this discussion. It starts on a negative note and ends on a negative note.

Nice Mangos did just upload a new episode (she now has 50). In that podcast, she and her patrons just kick around Harris, the IDW and then throw in Alex Jones to round it off.

Wahhaj family shares new information, possible motive behind New Mexico Compound (Aug 2018)

Yusuf Sabr, who claims to be the brother of Jany Leveille, one of the defendants in the New Mexico compound mystery, has reached out to the press and the Wahhaj family to provide further information into the possible motivation behind the family’s bizarre abduction of a three-year old child and his subsequent death. (The remains have now been confirmed to be those of Abdul Ghani.) Jany is the Islamic wife of Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, son of a well-known New York Imam of the same name. The deceased child, Abdul Ghani, is the biological son of Siraj Jr.

According to Yusuf, sometime last year, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj and his sister Hujrah Wahhaj visited an unnamed expert in black magic in London who let them know that they were both under evil spells—Siraj was under 12 spells and Hujrah was under 2 spells—cast by two people close to them. They believed the spells had been cast by Hakima, the legal wife of Siraj and biological mother of the deceased boy, and possibly their stepmother. They later changed their mind and decided the stepmother was not involved, but instead an unknown sister of Moroccan descent residing in Texas. Eventually, Siraj, Jany, Hujrah, Subhannah and Lucas (the 5 adults in the compound) all became convinced they were under spells and needed to escape the influence. In addition, Siraj Jr. was convinced that Hakima was performing spells on her child, Abdul Ghani, and that the boy needed to be extracted from her influence. To try and counteract the influence of evil spells, the family also began performing an exorcism-like ritual on one another called a “ruqya.”

As they headed to New Mexico, the family was involved in a car accident that they also attributed to bad magic when Siraj Jr. opened an email on his phone from this second unnamed sister. Once he opened the email, the entire family blacked out, and this caused the wreck—implying that the black magic was released through the email itself. From this time forward, the Wahhaj family no longer used email.

Once in New Mexico, it appears that Jany became convinced that she was receiving messages directly from god, or his angel, and that she could also interpret dreams. She could make accurate predictions and had vision-like revelations of what the family was supposed to do.

At this time the family also started performing more ruqya on Abdul Ghani and the child eventually died sometime around Christmas. According to Yusuf, the family kept Abdul’s body for 4 months, washing his body every 2 to 3 days, believing he would be resurrected, possibly as the messiah. After 4 months, when the body began to decay, the family gave up that idea and buried his body in Jesus-like fashion, wrapped in cloth and behind a stone.

Meanwhile, Jany interpreted a dream of Siraj Jr.  and ordered that they begin digging for treasure. According to Yusuf, this is the explanation for the tunnel that was found at the site. The family reported to Yusuf they had eventually struck it rich, finding trillions of dollars worth of diamonds. They sent pictures to Yusuf, who in turn shared the photos with Wahhaj family representatives. The “diamonds” appeared to be nothing more than rough quartz and a few other shiny stones. The family reburied the treasure on the site.

The brother Yusuf offered other examples of Jany’s special powers, including making it rain, rendering others invisible, and predicting the date they would be arrested.

Once Abdul Ghani was not resurrected, the family searched for other mystical explanations for why this might have occurred. Eventually, they decided Abdul Ghani had died at birth and had been possessed by a jinn (demon) and had been kept alive by his mother Hakima by evil spells. In addition, they believed that the real Abdul Ghani is inside the baby currently being carried by sister Subhannah who is now 7 months pregnant, and the suggestion is that the baby born to Subhannah will be the messiah. (To complicate matters further, Jany believes she is the true mother of the first Abdul Ghani and that Hakima stole the baby from her womb.)

When questioned about all the weaponry at the compound, Yusuf claims the family was not intent on committing acts of violence, but was afraid of their neighbors and simply had the weapons and ammunition as self-defense.

This story was relayed via a YouTube video recorded by Wahhaj family representatives and spokesmen Anas and Ali Abdul-Karim Judan. Neither of the two endorses this version of events nor do they believe this follows any kind of Islamic belief system practiced in the mainstream. They are simply relating what Jany’s brother Yusuf believes to be true. Yusuf lives in Haiti and his sister Jany is a Haitian citizen now on hold under ICE regulations.

Update from Imam Siraj Wahhaj’s wife, Jamilah Bint Leroy Daniel:

As Salaam Alaikum Facebook Family and Friends.

Update on baby Abdul Ghani, the medical examiner have finished identifying him. They are finalizing the caused of his death. In Sha Allah, we’re praying we can lay baby Abdul-Ghani to rest this upcoming week. I will post the date, time and place as soon as we know when we can return his remains to Georgia.

Many of you are asking about the 11 grandchildren who was found with their parents in New Mexico. In Sha Allah we’re working drastically to get our grandchildren with relatives who can care for each them. Please keep all of the grandchildren in your prayers.

In regards to their parents as of to date they are still waiting to be released all except for Siraj Ibn, and Jany Leveille. Many of you stressed your concerns about the LaunchGood donations with the Imam Siraj’s name on it, and if rather or not those funds are going to be used to get his adult children out on bail or to pay for Attorney fees?

I want to stress to you, your donations will only assist with Attorney fees for the family and the grandchildren to get them out of the system and to meet the guidelines and the needs of the children only.

For the record the lawyers who are representing the defenders are court appointed attorneys. Hujrah, Subhanah, and Lucas Morten are granted 20,000 signature bond with stipulations. In order for them to be released they must meet court orders. They do not need money from us to bail them out or to provide housing because the state are providing them housing and the three of them can sign themselves out on a signature bond. As of to date they are still in jail while waiting for the ankle monitors. Remember New Mexico laws are different.

Siraj Ibn is not being released on bail because of charges in Georgia. Jany not being released on bail because of her immigration charges.

What I am asking, for those who want to give please give to the LaunchGood with Imam Siraj name on it. And or donate to the go fund me page with Hakima Ramzi name on it, In Sha Allah.

Please don’t get caught up in the Fitnah and stop allowing people to whisper or drop seeds that caused you harm. Many tried to make it only about the Imam….however, this is about everyone who are involved. We all are hurting behind my stepchildren actions. A life was lost, lives was affected. Our grandchildren will need a lot of counseling. My stepchildren will need a lot physiological help.

My daughter in law will be needing counseling. Our number one priority is Hakima, and our grandchildren.

This is far from over because we still have the trial and only Allah knows their fate.

Always remember Allah is a Just God…no rock will be left unturned.

Please pray for my family and I will pray for yours… may Allah continue to bless us with much understanding and bless Hakima with much patience and to bless her to understand Allah’s Will… May Allah never put this type trial on other believers and their families… Ameen!!!

Mushroom Fairy Rings Inspire Fantastical Folklore until Science Steps In

Mushroom ring photos by Marilyn McLain.

Well, in my neck of the woods, heavy rainstorms combined with cooler weather have sparked Fairy Rings that have popped up overnight. On Facebook, friends and I started swapping stories about what we remembered about Fairy Rings—were they good luck, bad luck, should we go inside them?

That led me to do a little research on the real story behind these mysterious circles—along with some great lore that developed over centuries of trying to make sense of these odd occurrences.

Prospero: ‘You demi-puppets that, By moonshine do the green sour ringlets make’
The Project Gutenberg eBook, Shakespeare’s Comedy of The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, Illustrated by Edmund Dulac

We know today that the brain attempts to find explanations for natural occurrences, sometimes attributing supernatural forces to that which we do not understand. So, imagine yourself, centuries ago, getting up in the morning after a big rain and finding this perfect circle of mushrooms in your front yard, pasture, forest, castle—it’s your imagination, so take your pick.

Fairies, elves, pixies and little people were often associated with these rings, especially in European mythology. Some folks reasoned that little fairies danced in circles, sat on toadstools for a rest, or that the mushrooms could certainly have been little umbrellas for the delicate dancers that they left behind after they completed their moonlight frolicking.

Midsummer Night, with a boy and girl on the edge of the forest watching fairies dance with mushroom umbrellas (by Margaret Tarrant, English, 1920.

However, there were those who thought that since these circles appeared with such suddenness, there must be some sort of trickery involved—perhaps sorcery, witchcraft—one legend even supposed it was a ring which the devil entered at night to churn his milk. Another supposed it must have been a dragon, or perhaps just the dragon’s tail swooshing around.

My favorite myth comes from the south of Wales, where, as the story goes, two fellows—Rhys and Llewellyn, were passing through the countryside after a hard day’s work when Rhys reported hearing, however faintly, some sort of merriment and music. Like the irresistible Siren’s call in Greek tragedy, Rhys felt inexplicably compelled to seek out this beautiful sound and join in. Llewellyn went on home, but next morning realized Rhys had never returned during the night. After a failed search, much time passed, maybe as much as a year, and Llewellyn and some fellow countrymen decided to search once more. Using precautions so as not to be sucked into the ring themselves, they reached in and pulled Rhys away from the fairies with whom he was still dancing. When Rhys came to, he insisted he had only been dancing for five minutes. Rhys begged not to leave, but his friends forced him to come home where he promptly took to his bed, despondent, and soon thereafter died a premature death.

Google Books version of Sikes, Wirt (1880). British Goblins: Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions

Interestingly, several varieties of mushrooms are commonly found in these circular patterns—including both toxic mushrooms or hallucinogenic mushrooms, which may explain some of the more nefarious legends surrounding the circles. For example, if livestock were to nibble on a poisonous strain of the mushrooms, it would make sense that folklore would develop to explain why the milk-producing animal was now giving “soured” milk or perhaps even died as a result.

Or, if one consumed a “magic mushroom,” stories of lost time or vivid imagery of cavorting sprites might simply be the result of inadvertently consuming a hallucinogen or a mild toxin (which can lead to delirium).

Walter Jenks Morgan, “The Fairy Ring” (England, c.1870 – 1880)

Science explains what really happens to create these mysterious mushroom rings:

Mushroom growth occurs because of mycelium, the underground vegetative  organism that makes mushrooms grow. Mycelium naturally grows in a circle to maximize the amount of nutrients supplied to its fruit (in this case the fruit is the mushroom). It will continue to move outward into bigger circles and can live for years as it conquers more nutrients.

NAMA Mushroom Warning Poster

So if the mycelium remains healthy, the rings can come back year after year and just grow wider as time goes on. In fact, there was a ring found in France that was estimated to have been fruiting for more than 700 years and had grown to over 2000 feet in width. (The rings are estimated to creep along at somewhere between 3 and 19 inches per year).

So back to the original question between posed by my Facebook friends: are fairy circles good luck or bad luck and should we step inside?

I’ll just leave you with this little poem written by William Shakespeare:

If you see a fairy ring

In a field of grass,

Very lightly step around,

Tiptoe as you pass;

Last night fairies frolicked there,

And they’re sleeping somewhere near.

If you see a tiny fay

Lying fast asleep,

Shut your eyes and run away,

Do not stay or peep;

And be sure you never tell,

Or you’ll break a fairy spell.

It’s not about Alex Jones: National Coalition Against Censorship Weighs In

Simultaneous removals of the alt-right media personality from online platforms raise questions about content regulation, censorship and who chooses what we can see.
This week, Facebook, YouTube, Apple and Spotify removed posts, videos and podcasts from Alex Jones and his platform, Infowars. Many, across the political spectrum, breathed sighs of relief.

The removals shine a harsh light on the challenges tech companies face in applying their own content regulations.

Online platforms have been grappling for years with how to manage speech they–and many of their users–dislike. The New York Timeshas a good primer on how various platforms have approached regulating users’ content.

As private companies, these firms are free to take down whatever they want. They also serve as the largest global forums for the exchange of ideas–and presumably want to stay that way. But their guidelines surrounding offensive content remain vague, subjective and confusing. What happens when the gatekeepers dislike speech you agree with? Who decides what is offensive enough to ban? Who draws the line? Do you really trust them to do it well?

As Nadine Strossen writes, “Entrusting these powerful private-sector companies to decide what we can see, hear and discuss online is, simply put, a very bad idea.”

Where do we go from here?
Before we enthusiastically outsource control of the online public sphere to Big Tech, we need to consider the implications. There are other ways to confront the toxic conspiracy theories Infowars peddles in. We stand with our allies working in internet freedom, journalism and government transparency to defend free expression. As we deal with toxic online speech, we must remain true to our commitment to First Amendment principles.

Our democracy demands that we protect free expression.

What do you think?

We need your stories of internet censorship, thoughts on current methods of content regulation and what solutions you’d like to see.
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Statement On Anti-BDS Legislation & Universities from American Assoc of University Professors (AAUP)

Photo: A pro-Palestinian BDS protest in Paris, France August 13, 2015 AFP

Background on the BDS/Anti-BDS Movement

Israel Publishes BDS Blacklist; BDS Explained

Today the AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure released the following statement calling on public universities to stop requiring speakers and others to pledge that they do not now, nor will they in the future, endorse a specific a specific political movement known as boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) with regard to Israel

According to the National Coalition Against Censorship, at least seventeen states have passed legislation imposing punitive measures against supporters of boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) with regard to Israel. As a result, some public universities in those states have begun to require that external speakers invited to campus and others who contract with these universities, such as external reviewers of tenure and promotion materials, sign a statement pledging that they do not now, nor will they in the future, endorse BDS.

The American Association of University Professors does not endorse BDS. We take no position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict nor on calls for divestment or economic sanctions. But we oppose all academic boycotts, including an academic boycott of Israel, on the grounds that such boycotts violate the principles of academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas for which our organization has stood for over one- hundred years. We believe that academic freedom ought not to be subordinated to political exigency; there will always be compelling political causes that will challenge the ideal of free and open scholarly exchange.

It is precisely for this reason that our opposition to BDS is matched as resolutely by our opposition to these pledges, which are nothing short of an attempt to limit freedom of speech and belief. Indeed, they conjure the specter of loyalty and disclaimer oaths, mainstays of McCarthyism. The right of individuals to engage in political boycotts, and to come together collectively to support a boycott, has a long and storied history in American civil protests. At colleges and universities especially, where reasoned disagreement and debate should be the order of the day, demands that faculty and students forswear support for a peaceful protest are repugnant.

At a time when there is widespread interest in making sure that speakers on all points of the political spectrum are able to make themselves heard on American campuses, the contradiction in seeking to ban advocates of this particular position is obvious and unacceptable. We therefore call on all institutions of higher education in the United States to challenge the required renunciation of BDS and uphold freedom of speech and belief for all members of the academic community.

Additionally, AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure sent a letter to the Israeli government in regard to the interrogation, subsequent expulsion, and apparent banning from Israel of Columbia Law School Professor Katherine Franke over her supporter of the “Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions” (BDS) movement in April. The letter urges the government of Israel to “reconsider your immigration officer’s decision and to revoke any further ban on Professor Franke’s entry for purposes of collaborative academic and scholarly work in Israel.”

The letter to the Israeli government can be downloaded here.

Update: August 9, 2018 Imam Siraj Wahhaj Press Conference

On August 8, 2018, the AP released the following information on the Siraj Ibn Wahhaj family found outside of Taos, New Mexico:

“Prosecutors say in court documents that the father of a missing Georgia boy was training children at a New Mexico compound to commit school shootings.

The documents filed Wednesday say Siraj Ibn Wahhaj (see-DAHJ’ IBN wah-HAJ’) was conducting weapons training at the compound near the Colorado border where 11 hungry children were found in filthy conditions.

Prosecutors filed the documents while asking that Wahhaj be held without bail.

Wahhaj was arrested last week with four other adults. They are facing child abuse charges.

Authorities say the remains of a boy also were found on the compound but have not been positively identified by a medical examiners.”

—————

Siraj Ibn Wahhaj is the son of a prominent imam of the same name, Imam Siraj Ibm Wahhaj, https://www.imamsiraj.org/ with an official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/imamsirajwahhaj which refers to his official place of worship in Brooklyn as Masjid At Taqwa https://www.facebook.com/imamsirajwahhaj. At this location, live updates are being provided by the head of security, Ali Abdul-Karim Judan, in an effort to avoid misinformation about the case. Judan cautions listeners to avoid guilt by association as he promises the Iman is not involved in the activities of his son and the other adults also arrested, including some of his other children and their spouses.

Missing poster circulated by family.

Facebook activity by the family members of Siraj Ibn Wahhaj (who is referred to as being married to both Hakeemah Ramzi and Maryam (Jany) Leveille) seem to support this statement.

On January 5, the following information was posted on the Facebook page of Imam Siraj Wahhaj.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, please make duas for the safe return of our children and grandchildren: Siraj, Hujrah, Subhanah Wahhaj, son in law Luqman (Lucas) Morton, and daughter in law Maryam (Jany) Leveille and their children (our 12 grandchildren). We believe they may be traveling together. If you have any information or know their whereabouts, please contact Clayton County Police Department @ 770-477-3747 or inbox.

Please Share Post, In-Sha Allah!

Subhannah Wahhaj, one of the runaway adult children of the imam, posted the following rather cryptic and somewhat angry message on Facebook  on January 7:

So much hate. I didn’t know I was missing. I know my dad, he wouldn’t put out a message like that and then message people this nonsense.

Just a FYI, Imam Siraj Wahhaj does NOT manage his own Facebook account. His wife, Jamillah Jihad does (aka Jamella Jihad, which is the actual spelling of her name though she uses the other spelling at times).

Deception and lies! Be careful what you believe.

And be careful who you believe.

The truth will come to light. Don’t worry everyone. I am safe and well.

Think about it, why would my dad, Imam Siraj Wahhaj message people and tell them to contact the Clayton County Police if they find me and my siblings, rather than asking them to contact him?

My father has access to thousands of people He could easily get the word out in a heartbeat (just by making an announcement after Jummah, etc) if in fact he really wanted to do that.

Jamillah Jihad manages the Facebook account for Imam Siraj Wahhaj, NOT actually Imam Siraj. Ask him.

You’ve just been exposed! Everything is NOT what it seems.

Ask Inteligent questions and DON’T get taken for a ride. Shaytan would do that to you.

To everyone, trying to send me messages through messenger, I do NOT have messenger so if you’ve sent me a message through messenger, I have NOT been able to read it.

Please hold close to Allah. Spend the night praying and connect with Allah’s words as much as you can through the Qur’an, seek His guidance and protection and ask His help in discerning the truth.

There will be a time where the truth will be regarded as lies and vice versa. DON’T believe the hype!

Daughter in law Naeemah Rashid posted the following information on or about January 7:

Naeemah Rashid As salamu alaikum everyone, I am a family member (I’m Imam’s daughter in law) I’m married to Imam Siraj Wahhaj and Balkis Aura Wahhaj youngest son Muhammad. Please ignore all the negative posts. Shaytan is trying to distract us from finding our family members. If any of you know Hujrah, Subhanah, and Ibn Siraj they are very close to their parents. Not one of them have contacted their father or mother in over a month!, regardless of the message that you seen posted by Subhana, she haven’t contacted her parents. Siraj, Maryam and their 7 children left a month ago leaving cars in the driveway and house in tact. Hujrah and her daughter Nawailah was all last seen with Siraj. So please continue to make duas because only Allah can bring this great fitnah to an end. You can visit my page Nur Muslimah for any updates. FYI: this is my father in law’s page and he not going to allow any of us to post on his page be his wife or other family members without his permission, he only asked everyone to make duas for their safe return, and report it to authorities because they are actively trying to locate his family.

A plea for the family to return was posted by the missing adults’ biological mother and the Imam’s first wife Balkis Aura Wahhaj‎ on December 14, 2017

An important decision for parents who are separating and making plans to dissolve a marriage are conversations and thoughts directed to what are the steps to co-parent. How can we provide the child/children with a smooth transition for the overall well-being of the child/hildren with the least amount of trauma and discomfort.

As humans we will make decisions and engage in actions that we may think at the time is a good idea, but if the results produce destabilization, then there is a need to develop another plan to regroup, restore, calibrate and restabilize.

As I can reflect on the pain that prophet Yaqub felt when his son Yusuf was taken I am able to relate to that pain. And MY HEART IS HURTING RIGHT NOW.

AS A MOTHER YOU WANT THE BEST FOR YOUR CHILDREN YOU WANT THEM TO SURPASS YOU, USE THEIR MISSION AND GIFTS TO EXCEL AND MAKE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY! AND I WANT THE SAME FOR MY GRANDCHILDREN!

MY GRAND CHILDREN’S LIVES HAVE BEEN DISRUPTED. THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR CARE OR PROTECTION.

If you make a mistake Allah allows you to repent and then you can create another action.

I know you HUJRAH and IBN and MARYAM have had your TRIALS and SUCCESSES!

And IBN I know you LOVE your kids!

WITH THE INTENTION OF PROTECTING YOUR KIDS THIS SITUATION HAS GONE LEFT FIELD.

SO I AM ASKING you MY ADULT CHILDREN

PLEASE COME IN FROM THE WILDERNESS BRING AND THE FAMILY BACK HOME!

AND WORK TOGETHER TO DEVELOP ANOTHER PLAN THAT IS BEST FOR ALL THE CHILDREN. You the adults can make a different decision to turn this situation in another direction.

WE ARE PRAYING FOR ALL OF YOU ‘LL SAFE RETURN QUICKLY!

I LOVE YOU! MUMZIE

On January 7, Balkis posted a more detailed plea for her adult children and grandchildren to come out of hiding:

I am writing this to dispel all rumors and present the community with all the facts.

1 Regarding Imam Siraj:

He is aware of the post and has authorized this post on his official facebook page.

  1. Abdul Ghani was taken under the pretext that SIraj Ibn would take him to the park and he never returned with him. Siraj Ibn took Abdul Ghani from his mother Hakeemah Ramzi on December 1, 2017. Abdul Ghani 3 years old has a medical condition called Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) at birth. He cannot talk or walk. He takes anti seizure medicine. He has not had his medicine since leaving his home. This event did not happen in a vacuum.

The other following facts are follows:

3 There is many intricate pieces of events that lead to this episode. There is official documentation on the events of this situation. Muhammad my son tried to have an Islamic mediation with his brother, Siraj Ibn, and Hakeemah, but he refused to attend and resolve the situation Islamically. It is documented that Siraj, Hujrah and Maryam have left their homes around December 4 or 5.

4 I have left messages on the above phones. The phones (Hujrah, Siraj Ibn. Maryam. Subhanah and Luqman) were cut off on December 9. Muhammad my son has been involved in this situation since day 1. The facebook page Nur Muslimah was set up as an information page which I have posted on previously.

6 So Subhanah and Luqman may not be technically missing, because they voluntarily moved to Alabama, before this happened. We believe they are all together presently.

7 On December 13 Luqman (Lucas Morton) has had contact with Ibn and Hujrah and Maryam, because he came to pick the family up after Ibn had a car accident that totalled the car on December 13. This was documented in a police report.

  1. Luqman showed at Muhammad’s door on December 31, with a detailed letter written by Maryam Leville (Ibn’s wife) addressing Muhammad and asking him to join the entire family at their location (which she did not disclose). They talked for 45 minutes at which time the police showed up and checked his van and questioned him. The police asked when did he last see the family and Luqman stated December 1. The police informed him he will be arrested if he was found telling a lie. Luqman then went off to the laundromat to wash clothes and spent the night in the van.

We would like Abdul Ghani to be returned to his mother. Hakeemah took excellent care of him!

I am concerned for my children and grandchildren well being and I pray for their safe return. And I am asking the believers to pray for their safe return. Ameen!

My email and phone number has not changed. Please use it.

Siraj please return Ghani to his mother and bring the family back home.

Subhanah and Hujrah I would never do anything to cause you harm and you know who to contact and your peers are for here to support you. Hujrah Check you email.

The Imam’s second wife, Jamilah Bint Leroy Daniel, posted the following January 17:

It is with a heavy heart to inform you that we still have not heard from our family members (Siraj Ibn Wahhajj, Hujrah Wahhaj, Subhanah Wahhaj, Maryam (Jany Leveille-FB Ja Muslimah) and Luqman FB Lucas Morton or their children). Hopefully, this long message will explain what we do know. Though many of you may have read the comments on Subhanah’s facebook page she still has not contacted her father Imam Siraj Wahhaj, her mother Balkis Aura Wahhajj or any of her siblings. Regardless of what you may be reading this is out of Subhanah’s character.

As I was thinking, what can I say to you today about my stepchildren and their spouses? I asked Allah for guidance.

I was reading Subhanah last family group text November 21, 2017, and the text message of our conversation to one another on December 3, 2017. I screenshot the message to share with you, so you can better understand why this is shocking to our family. The text message represents the Subhanah that we know, she loves family, and she enjoys sharing information with her family and friends… especially inspired surahs and ayyats from the Quran.

Some of you may have heard from her, and you may believe you are helping her….if you’re not encouraging Subhanah to do the right thing to share information on the whereabouts of Abdul Ghani and his father, her brother, then you’re assisting her in the wrong. And If you’re involved in hiding this family ask yourself the question is it worth risking losing your child/ren or imprisoning yourself. Allah is a JUST GOD, please remember this! With this being said you must “THINK” Siraj Ibn Wahhaj is Abdul Ghani’s father and he is legally and lawfully Hakima’s husband of 15 years with no known marital problems, and if they did have problems, this still is no reason to run off.

Sharing: On November 30, Ibn Siraj told Hakima he was taking their son to the park. Abdul Ghani went with his father without his medication or any of his clothes. On Friday, December 1, before the report was file they were last seen at Jummah with Hujrah and Subhanah, which one sister said that something seems off about Subhanah…the sister stated that Subhanah stayed in the restroom the entire time during jummah. Allah knows best. Then the next question where is Hujrah and why did she disappear with her daughter… On December 5 Hujrah contacted her daughter’s school to inform the school that her daughter will not be returning to school due to a family emergency. Why would she run off, and disconnect her facebook account and her cell phone when she had so much going on for herself, she is a speaker, and she was coming out with her next book…. Maryam (Ja Muslimah) why would she run off? This question about Maryam is easy… of course, she is with Ibn Siraj and their four children by Ibn Siraj, and her two sons by her former husband, and they are with Hakima’s son Abdul Ghani. Even if they all believe their lives are being threatened why not reach out to the authorities and or contact their father or mother? These are the questions we’re asking. It has been a month in a half. The last known location for Ibn Siraj, Maryam and the 7 children including Abdul Ghani was in Alabama, Ibn Siraj was in a car accident. The police reported he total the vehicle and Maryam (Jany Levielle) and 7 children were taken to the hospital. By the time the police realized this was the missing family they had left the hospital. This incident happened in December. The question we all are asking, why are they running and who are they running from?

Before they all disconnected their phones including Subhanah, their parents called and texted each of them, and they got NO REPLY!

We’re not going to stop searching for Abdul Ghani and the other family members. This is out of character for all of them!

How can you help? Pray that Allah protects all of the children and their parents, bring Abdul-Ghani home to his mother, print and share flyer. And share this message with the family if you’re in contact with them, please, In Sha Allah!

May Allah answer our prayers and reunite our family…Ameen!

Jamilah posted again on March 20:

I am asking you to remember sister Hakima Ramazi (Imam Siraj and Balkis’s daughter in law) in your prayers, the pain and test are real! It is going on 5 months since Hakima last seen her son and her husband. Despite the efforts of the Clayton County police department and FBI agents haven’t been able to locate Siraj Ibn Wahhaj and Abdul Ghani Wahhaj who was last seen travelling with Maryam Leville, Hujrah Wahhaj, Subhanah Wahhaj and Luqman Morton and 11 other children (Abdul Ghani makes 12). As you know nothing happens without Allah’s permission. I am making a personal plea, please pray Allah reunite the family in the good. Ask Allah to continue to protect each one of them and guide each of them. Only Allah knows the seen and unseen. Allah has POWER over all things. For whatever reason Allah has not allowed them to return or call their parents directly only Allah knows. Please continue to share and if anyone knows there whereabouts inbox us if you don’t want to contact authorities.

My advice to everyone who is reading this message pay attention to the signs… if any of your family members start following people who are feeding them with falsehood and you know something is wrong, please step in to get your family member help.

Remember: When you love for Allah, it’s easy to face that person and correct them when they’re wrong. But when your love is NOT for Allah and your love is false it’s hard to confront a person or correct that person.

May Allah rectify all affairs and protect us from wickedness and evilness. May Allah protect us from ourselves…Ameen!

And, saddest of all, is the video plea made by the mother of the abducted child, now believed to be dead:

The Poem:

How-To

If you got hiv, say aids. If you a girl,

say you’re pregnant––nobody gonna lower

themselves to listen for the kick. People

passing fast. Splay your legs, cock a knee

funny. It’s the littlest shames they’re likely

to comprehend. Don’t say homeless, they know

you is. What they don’t know is what opens

a wallet, what stops em from counting

what they drop. If you’re young say younger.

Old say older. If you’re crippled don’t

flaunt it. Let em think they’re good enough

Christians to notice. Don’t say you pray,

say you sin. It’s about who they believe

they is. You hardly even there.

The Mob:

A white, able, straight, cis-male poet appropriates personas that are off limits to him. His poem makes people feel sad, frustrated and angry. Wee is an ableist, misogynist, racist, ageist and white privileged, all around bad person who co-opts the experiences of marginalized people because his life is so uninteresting.

The Nation’s Apology:

Editor’s note: On July 24, 2018, The Nation and its poetry editors, Stephanie Burt and Carmen Giménez Smith, made this statement about the poem …, which contains disparaging and ableist language that has given offense and caused harm to members of several communities.

As poetry editors, we hold ourselves responsible for the ways in which the work we select is received. We made a serious mistake by choosing to publish the poem “How-To.”  We are sorry for the pain we have caused to the many communities affected by this poem. We recognize that we must now earn your trust back.  Some of our readers have asked what we were thinking. When we read the poem we took it as a profane, over-the-top attack on the ways in which members of many groups are asked, or required, to perform the work of marginalization. We can no longer read the poem in that way.

We are currently revising our process for solicited and unsolicited submissions. But more importantly, we are listening, and we are working. We are grateful for the insightful critiques we have heard, but we know that the onus of change is on us, and we take that responsibility seriously. In the end, this decision means that we need to step back and look at not only our editing process, but at ourselves as editors.

* * *

The Poet’s Apology:

“To all who have voiced questions and concerns about my poem in The Nation: I am listening closely and I am reflecting deeply. I am sorry for the pain I have caused, and I take responsibility for that. I intended for this poem to address the invisibility of homelessness, and clearly it doesn’t work. Treading anywhere close to blackface is horrifying to me and I am profoundly regretful. The fact that I did not foresee this reading of the poem and the harm it could cause is humbling and eye-opening. I am beginning a process of talking to people and reevaluating what it means to make art in this world from a place of privilege, and the responsibility and accountability that comes with it. As someone suggested, I will be donating my publication honorarium to Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness. I am grateful to all of you for voicing your thoughts and feelings and I will be thinking hard about this for a long, long time. I continue to listen.”

________

First of all, many just dismissed the poem as bad writing, probably due to their personal offense. In reality, the poem is written in the voice of a streetwise homeless person, giving savvy advice on how to manipulate passersby into handing out a good amount of cash, playing off sympathies, amplifying misfortunes to capitalize on them—how to make these misfortunes work in their favor. It’s a con—a survival tip—a smart way to squeeze the maximum out of unsuspecting strangers.

(Interestingly, Wee and his brother made an award-winning documentary short during which they hopped freight trains, so the likelihood that he did have some lived experience or exposure to homelessness was likely not a valid criticism, but that’s not a prerequisite for a writer to slip into a role.)

So… should The Nation and Wee have issued these groveling apologies in what amounts to –to my mind— little more than censorship?

No, no, and hell no!

How could this have been handled without censoring the author or bending to the mob?

The National Coalition Against Censorship has a magnificent publication called “Museum Best Practices for Managing Controversy.” The document is written as a how-to manual for addressing concerns in the visual arts when a work is deemed offensive and garners public complaints.

This guide could easily be reapplied to any situation to thoughtfully and fairly address any complaint lodged against an artist, writer, publisher—you name it.

Of particular interest:

The two core elements in response to a complaint are:

Leave the exhibition exactly as it is while establishing a period for review and discussion.

Establish a learning opportunity by creating possibilities for thoughtful discussion between concerned stakeholders.

Evaluate the complaint(s): Who is complaining? What are their credentials? Is the complaint sincere criticism or an act of political opportunism by a group leveraging controversy to serve other goals?

Here are the best practices in full:

Preamble

The Museum Best Practices for Managing Controversy is designed to provide museums and other cultural institutions of any size or scope with guidelines that can help manage controversial content and transform controversy into a learning moment about the nature of diverse opinions and an institution’s ability to address them. This non-binding document of best practices offers guidance to an institution concerned about or confronted with accusations of inappropriate, objectionable, or offensive content. Institutions caught in the frantic environment of controversy can refer to this set of strategies designed to calm the waters, open space for conversation and learning, and prevent or defuse a potentially volatile situation through deliberate steps to create meaningful dialogue.

When these guidelines are regularly used by cultural institutions and referenced as a recommended resource by their respective professional associations, the body of practice across the field becomes stronger and more consistent, building credibility and a positive image of all organizations. The simple ingredient of a nationally recognized protocol creating time and space to open dialogue may prevent an over-cautious, self-punishing reaction by institutions caught up in controversy. It may also encourage the institution to address sensitive issues of civic engagement and help fulfil the museum’s mission as a forum for the exploration of diverse ideas.

Introduction

The guidelines reflect an in-depth analysis of various historical and current sources, among them governance documents produced by arts and culture organizations as well as academic institutions, and statements by individual representatives of exhibiting institutions. The guidelines consist of two components: a free-speech statement that may be adopted in its entirety and a best practices template that may support exhibiting institutions, museums, performance spaces, art schools and others when they draft their own procedures, specific to their particular needs.

There are three strategies museums can use to resist pressure and assure their curatorial autonomy:

  1. Public Statement Affirming Commitment to Artistic and Intellectual Freedom of Speech (“Freedom of Speech Commitment”);
  2. Preparation in Advance of Upcoming Programs and Potential Controversy, through agreement on clear curatorial procedures, feedback mechanisms, and educational plans;
  3. Procedures for Addressing the Press or Complaints from the Public after an Exhibition or Special Program Opens.

Taken together, the Free Speech Commitment and the procedures to anticipate and respond to controversy will help to:

  • Equip an institution with the tools to respond to criticism of controversial content;
  • Improve relationships with the public;
  • Support the right of audience members to access a wide variety of work;
  • Safeguard the exhibiting institution against self-censorship;
  • Introduce transparency;
  • Ensure institutional support of curatorial decision-making; and
  • Provide board member orientation.

The promotion and use of these strategies by national organizations and leading institutions will help validate them as the best practices in the field, and will help create communities of support when controversy arises in a specific institution.

Freedom of Speech Commitment

Each institution is encouraged to draft a Freedom of Speech Commitment statement.

Sample / suggested template:

Freedom of speech is the foundation of our communities and our nation. The works this institution exhibits may awe, illuminate, challenge, unsettle, confound, provoke, and, at times, offend. We defend the freedom to create content and exhibit such work anywhere in the world, and we recognize the privilege of living in a country where creating, exhibiting, and experiencing such work is a constitutional right.

To exhibit a work of art is not to endorse the work or the vision, ideas, and opinions of the artist. It is to uphold the right of all to experience diverse visions and views. If and when controversies arise from the exhibition of a work of art, we welcome public discussion and debate with the belief that such discussion is integral to the experience of the art. Consistent with our fundamental commitment to freedom of speech, however, we will not censor exhibitions in response to political or ideological pressure.

Preparation in Advance of Upcoming Programs and Potential Controversy

  1. Specify clear curatorial selection procedures. Such procedures help institutions respond to complaints.

Document internal curatorial selection criteria.

Specify who is responsible for selection (gallery director, curatorial department, faculty members, peer panel); specify composition of the panel (e.g., artists, curators, and other arts professionals or arts patrons); and explain how its members are selected.

In the case of open calls and juried exhibitions, specify procedures and deadlines from the initial stage (application forms or submission of proposals) to the final decision.

  1. Create an educational/public engagement schedule and framework for the exhibition before it opens.

Collect materials that identify the artist, the exhibition, and the larger context and history of the work.

After the curatorial process is completed, provide opportunities for community dialogue to help prepare educational programming around an exhibition. The purpose of such discussions is not to limit curatorial decision-making but to help with outreach and engagement of the community.

Qualitative research from focus groups can help museums to strategize on how they might acknowledge particular sensitivities and engender trust through interpretation, programming, partnerships, and communications.

Identify target audiences: It is important to identify audiences who can provide genuine input and not needlessly empower oppositional groups, who are often not interested in dialogue but rather in stirring controversy to promote their specific agendas.

Workshops: In order to promote respectful discussion, an institution should encourage dialogue, prepare for effective responses to criticism, and provide guidance on issues of presentation such as phrasing of text, staff training, and responding to public queries.

  1. Carry out preliminary public relations.

Create a strong communications plan before there is a problem, especially in cases where there is concern about possible controversy.

When appropriate, launch a media campaign to present your position and offer opportunities for dialogue.

When concerned about a potentially difficult project, find supporters among your funders and form coalitions with other arts organizations or community groups. This strategy builds trust, understanding, and more fruitful alliances.

  1. Make use of signage/educational programming.

Written warnings or disclaimers should be informational and not prejudicial.

Produce a variety of educational materials.

  1. Plan communications between the curator, the educators, and the board.

The curator and the museum director work with the board to inform them about upcoming shows and prepare them to answer questions about an exhibition.

Plan conversations and collaborations between curators and educators, from the earliest stages of what might be deemed potentially difficult projects, to develop opportunities for constructive civic engagement.

  1. Review the institution’s crisis plan and consult with your legal counsel.

Procedures for Addressing the Press or Complaints from the Public after an Exhibition or Special Program Opens

A statement of support for freedom of speech works best if accompanied by a policy outlining the appropriate response in a situation where an individual or a group complains about the content of work on display. The policy statement should include procedures to help avoid disputes about content and interpretation.

The two core elements in response to a complaint are:

Leave the exhibition exactly as it is while establishing a period for review and discussion.

Establish a learning opportunity by creating possibilities for thoughtful discussion between concerned stakeholders.

Handling Complaints from the Community

Ensure the work stays on display until the controversy has been reviewed.

Alert the director/those in executive positions, including the PR department and general counsel, of the complaints and any context surrounding them. Complaints should be brought to the attention of the director or staff member responsible for managing such issues.

Notify the artist(s) and funders and prepare them for possible press attention. In some cases it may be better to recommend that the concerned artists do not take press calls.

Evaluate the complaint(s): Who is complaining? What are their credentials? Is the complaint sincere criticism or an act of political opportunism by a group leveraging controversy to serve other goals?

If you do not have one, create a crisis plan. Appoint a “crisis manager” along with an ad hoc team that is best equipped to deal with the situation.

Prepare and disseminate talking points/questions and answers.

Find supporters. Form coalitions with other arts organizations and activate networks. Contact existing arts and free speech groups.

Provide a copy of the exhibition selection procedure or similar document to the complainant.

Develop an official complaint form. If the complainant is not satisfied after discussing the details of the exhibition and artist’s intent, have the complainant formally lodge his/her complaint in writing.

Schedule additional programming to provide a platform for diverse opinions.

Consider contacting legislators or other public officials, if appropriate.

Working with the Press and Media

Establish one spokesperson to discuss the institution’s programming priorities with the public and the media. Ensure that all board members defer to the spokesperson and otherwise refrain from all comments in all public places or circumstances.

Focus on the museum’s mission, rather than the details. Contextualize an exhibition within the museum’s exhibition history. Avoid an approach that empowers the opposition and allows him/her to frame the discussion.

Use the dynamics of the media to your advantage and be aware of the difference between the cultural press and hard news, as well as who is writing/producing the story, what section of a paper/type of broadcast it will appear in, and who is editing it.

Involve the board and key staff in refining the communication plan (developed in the preparatory stage).

Use a straightforward, neutral approach.

Consider seeking the assistance of a PR or crisis management firm.

Remember, similar strategies have existed for years in libraries where book complaints are constantly being reviewed and where intellectual freedom is fiercely protected. Consider consulting the American Library Association for similar management responses.
