Statement by President Trump on Jerusalem Courtesy White House

The White House
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. When I came into office, I promised to look at the world’s challenges with open eyes and very fresh thinking. We cannot solve our problems by making the same failed assumptions and repeating the same failed strategies of the past. Old challenges demand new approaches.

My announcement today marks the beginning of a new approach to conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

In 1995, Congress adopted the Jerusalem Embassy Act, urging the federal government to relocate the American embassy to Jerusalem and to recognize that that city — and so importantly — is Israel’s capital. This act passed Congress by an overwhelming bipartisan majority and was reaffirmed by a unanimous vote of the Senate only six months ago.

Yet, for over 20 years, every previous American president has exercised the law’s waiver, refusing to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem or to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city.

Presidents issued these waivers under the belief that delaying the recognition of Jerusalem would advance the cause of peace. Some say they lacked courage, but they made their best judgments based on facts as they understood them at the time. Nevertheless, the record is in. After more than two decades of waivers, we are no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result.

Therefore, I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering.

I’ve judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians. This is a long-overdue step to advance the peace process and to work towards a lasting agreement.

Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital. Acknowledging this as a fact is a necessary condition for achieving peace.

It was 70 years ago that the United States, under President Truman, recognized the State of Israel. Ever since then, Israel has made its capital in the city of Jerusalem — the capital the Jewish people established in ancient times. Today, Jerusalem is the seat of the modern Israeli government. It is the home of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, as well as the Israeli Supreme Court. It is the location of the official residence of the Prime Minister and the President. It is the headquarters of many government ministries.

For decades, visiting American presidents, secretaries of state, and military leaders have met their Israeli counterparts in Jerusalem, as I did on my trip to Israel earlier this year.

Jerusalem is not just the heart of three great religions, but it is now also the heart of one of the most successful democracies in the world. Over the past seven decades, the Israeli people have built a country where Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and people of all faiths are free to live and worship according to their conscience and according to their beliefs.

Jerusalem is today, and must remain, a place where Jews pray at the Western Wall, where Christians walk the Stations of the Cross, and where Muslims worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

However, through all of these years, presidents representing the United States have declined to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In fact, we have declined to acknowledge any Israeli capital at all.

But today, we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. This is nothing more, or less, than a recognition of reality. It is also the right thing to do. It’s something that has to be done.

That is why, consistent with the Jerusalem Embassy Act, I am also directing the State Department to begin preparation to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This will immediately begin the process of hiring architects, engineers, and planners, so that a new embassy, when completed, will be a magnificent tribute to peace.

In making these announcements, I also want to make one point very clear: This decision is not intended, in any way, to reflect a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement. We want an agreement that is a great deal for the Israelis and a great deal for the Palestinians. We are not taking a position of any final status issues, including the specific boundaries of the Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem, or the resolution of contested borders. Those questions are up to the parties involved.

The United States remains deeply committed to helping facilitate a peace agreement that is acceptable to both sides. I intend to do everything in my power to help forge such an agreement. Without question, Jerusalem is one of the most sensitive issues in those talks. The United States would support a two-state solution if agreed to by both sides.

In the meantime, I call on all parties to maintain the status quo at Jerusalem’s holy sites, including the Temple Mount, also known as Haram al-Sharif.

Above all, our greatest hope is for peace, the universal yearning in every human soul. With today’s action, I reaffirm my administration’s longstanding commitment to a future of peace and security for the region.

There will, of course, be disagreement and dissent regarding this announcement. But we are confident that ultimately, as we work through these disagreements, we will arrive at a peace and a place far greater in understanding and cooperation.

This sacred city should call forth the best in humanity, lifting our sights to what it is possible; not pulling us back and down to the old fights that have become so totally predictable. Peace is never beyond the grasp of those willing to reach.

So today, we call for calm, for moderation, and for the voices of tolerance to prevail over the purveyors of hate. Our children should inherit our love, not our conflicts.

I repeat the message I delivered at the historic and extraordinary summit in Saudi Arabia earlier this year: The Middle East is a region rich with culture, spirit, and history. Its people are brilliant, proud, and diverse, vibrant and strong. But the incredible future awaiting this region is held at bay by bloodshed, ignorance, and terror.

Vice President Pence will travel to the region in the coming days to reaffirm our commitment to work with partners throughout the Middle East to defeat radicalism that threatens the hopes and dreams of future generations.

It is time for the many who desire peace to expel the extremists from their midst. It is time for all civilized nations, and people, to respond to disagreement with reasoned debate –- not violence.

And it is time for young and moderate voices all across the Middle East to claim for themselves a bright and beautiful future.

So today, let us rededicate ourselves to a path of mutual understanding and respect. Let us rethink old assumptions and open our hearts and minds to possible and possibilities. And finally, I ask the leaders of the region — political and religious; Israeli and Palestinian; Jewish and Christian and Muslim — to join us in the noble quest for lasting peace.

Thank you. God bless you. God bless Israel. God bless the Palestinians. And God bless the United States. Thank you very much. Thank you.

(The proclamation is signed.)

Political Irony & Sarcasm on Twitter: New Study Finds it Appeals to Followers of India’s ‘Twitter-in-chief’

“We try and explain what makes him popular,” said Joyojeet Pal, U-M assistant professor of information. “Modi’s irony provides a form of political spectacle and resonated on social media as shown by high retweeting of his sarcastically worded messages.”

India’s ‘Twitter-in-chief’: Decoding Modi’s social media brand

ANN ARBOR—With 36 million followers on Twitter, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the world’s No. 2 most popular politician in the Twittersphere after Donald Trump.

The way Modi uses sarcasm against his opponents is the focus of a new University of Michigan School of Information study that analyzed more than 9,000 tweets by Modi over a six-year period.

“We try and explain what makes him popular,” said Joyojeet Pal, U-M assistant professor of information. “Modi’s irony provides a form of political spectacle and resonated on social media as shown by high retweeting of his sarcastically worded messages.”

Published in the International Journal of Communication, the study examined the Twitter account of Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) to show how he used political irony and sarcasm to become broadly appealing and refashion his political style.

The researchers coded the tweets into nine broad themes: cricket, Rahul Gandhi (opposition leader), entertainment, sarcasm, corruption, development, foreign affairs, Hinduism, and science and technology.

After coding, they found that sarcastic tweets were closely concentrated around election and campaigning cycles.”

In many of Modi’s tweets during national elections, he referred to the main opposition party as corrupt and Ghandi, its rising leader who also has a huge Twitter following, as “Rahul Baba” or “Shahzada (prince).”

By using humor and sarcasm, he was signaling that the party was not in touch with its roots and letting his own followers get the inside joke, the researchers said.

Here is an example of a Modi tweet, which garnered 2,545 retweets: “The way Rahul Baba is making statements with a dash of comedy in them, I think the TV show of Kapil Sharma may soon have to shut shop.”

According to the U-M researchers, Modi’s use of sarcasm builds on a longer tradition of slogan humor during political rallies.

“There are plenty of attacks, rhetoric, cleverly worded jibes and jokes,” Pal said.

Although social media did not reach many of the traditional rural and peri-urban upper caste Hindu voters of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, they extended the prime minister’s appeal to a new young urban constituency.

“After the election, the sarcasm and mention of Gandhi disappears,” Pal said. “Instead, the celebrity mentions and tweets about foreign policy increase dramatically.”

According to the researchers, the sarcasm helped separate Hindutva-oriented content, which is traditionally more divisive than the pan-Indian patriotic rhetoric of “India First,” through which Modi has gained a more secular standing.

“The power of Modi’s message is in the juxtaposition of his past as a train station tea-seller alongside his present as a selfie-clicking leader of a strong aspirational but fundamentally nationalist state,” Pal said. “Sarcasm is as much a message from Modi as it is a message about him.”

Press Release
President Trump’s actions have become “dangerous for democracy”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, and colleagues, today introduced five Articles of Impeachment against President Donald J. Trump. See the articles here.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“The time has come to make clear to the American people and to this President that his train of injuries to our Constitution must be brought to an end through impeachment.  I believe there is evidence that he attempted to obstruct an investigation into Russia’s interference with the U.S. presidential election and links between between Russia and the Trump campaign, most notably the firing of FBI Director James Comey. The president’s blatant refusal to separate himself from his businesses has led to clear instances of conflict of interest that appear to violate both the domestic and foreign emoluments clauses. And his attacks on ‘so-called’ judges and ‘fake news’ have undermined public confidence in the judiciary and the press. It’s time for Congress to take action to stop this reckless and harmful behavior by removing Mr. Trump from office and to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States.”

Congressman Luis Gutierrez (IL-04) made the following statement:

“Congress has the power of impeachment when behavior by the President puts the nation and our laws at risk and I think we are at that point, despite the ongoing, important investigations.  Congress needs to step in when there is evidence that the President is interfering with the judicial branch, obstructing or disrupting investigations, or if the President is profiting improperly from his office.  This is the start of a long process and it needs to get started now because as a Member of Congress and as a member of the Judiciary Committee, it is my job.”

Congressman Al Green (TX-09) made the following statement:

“This brings us another step closer to impeachment.”

Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (OH-11) made the following statement:

“In the nearly 300 days since he was sworn in, it has become evident that President Trump is a clear and present danger to our democracy. It is high time that Congress take a serious look at the President’s actions,” said Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, (OH-11). “If those actions are found to be in violation of the Constitution, then the Congress of the United States needs to do the job the American people elected us to do.”

Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY13) made the following statement:

“Donald Trump is a threat to our national security and to our justice, and once and for all, we are taking a stand to formally call for his impeachment in the name of our constituents, in support of our Constitution, and for the protection of our Democracy,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “Trump is dangerous and nearly every month that he has served in office, Americans have witnessed some violation of our values, civil liberties, and access to opportunities that represent who we are at home and to our allies around the world. Mr. Trump is failing and has turned back the clock on the more than 50 years of progress our country has made in civil rights and equality. He has obstructed justice, violated the Constitution, and undermined the independence of our judicial system and the freedom of the press. The evidence is there, and the course of action is clear. It’s time to impeach Trump now.”

Trump is a human reject going to hell, North Korea claims

Rodong Sinmun Sheds Light on Trump’s Hideous Crimes

Date: 11/15/2017 | Source: KCNA.kp (En) |

Pyongyang, November 15 (KCNA) — Trump betrayed his true colors as an old lunatic, mean trickster and human reject during his one night and two days stay in south Korea, says Rodong Sinmun on Wednesday in a commentary.

Trump in his 35 minutes-long address to the “National Assembly” of south Korea, painted a black picture of the DPRK for 22 minutes, spouting all sorts of rubbish against it, only to stun the public, the commentary notes, and goes on:

The worst crime for which he can never be pardoned is that he dared malignantly hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK.

Trump, who is no more than an old slave of money, dared point an accusing finger at the sun. He should know that he is just a hideous criminal sentenced to death by the Korean people.

He will be forced to pay dearly for his blasphemy any moment.

The second on the list of his hideous crimes is that he malignantly hurt the dignified DPRK and Korean-style socialist system.

Korean-style socialism centered on the popular masses which made its appearance in denial of the exploiting system of capitalism at an inevitable stage of the development of history is  the most advantageous and scientific socialism embodying the nature of mankind to live independently.

Such a depraved guy as Trump, who is dreaming a pipedream of spreading venom of corrupt American capitalism in denial of the most advantageous social system of the DPRK, will never grasp the truth that injustice can never prevail over justice until his last breath, buried under the bulwark of the great single-minded unity of the DPRK.

The third of his thrice-cursed crimes is that he spouted a load of rubbish to paint a black picture of the happy life of the great Korean people.

The one who violated the dignity of the people and insulted them should never expect their pardon.

The Korean people will regard the face of Trump as a symbol of wolf-like U.S. imperialism and as a target of merciless retaliation and send him to the hell he likes so much to tout.

The fourth is that he twisted the history of justice and cried out for stifling the DPRK by force of violence.

The reckless remarks spouted by Trump during his junkets cannot but be viewed as the final confirmation of the White House’s policy hostile to the DPRK, a total denial of the existence of the DPRK and an open declaration of war not to allow the existence of the Korean people any more.

Rabid dog’s barking can never frighten the Korean people.

It is the principle and way of the DPRK to toughly react to any acts of hostility.

The U.S. will have to bitterly experience what it dislikes most and witness what it thought of in nightmare.

Never Go Full Dotard

Donald Trump’s tweet about Kim Jong-Un calling him “old” really only scratched the surface of the insults North Korea has hurled. In state run media, which has made the use of the word “dotard” a household term, he is also referred to regularly as a lunatic, hard-of-hearing maniac, hysterical warmonger, rogue gangster and mentally deranged barking dog.

In 2014, during the release of the satirical comedy “The Interview,” North Korea unleashed a string of insults against President Obama (translations vary):

“Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds, like a monkey in a tropical forest.”

“You can also tell this by his appearance and behavior, and while it may be because he is a crossbreed, one cannot help thinking the more one sees him that he has escaped from a monkey’s body.”

“(He) still has the figure of monkey while the human race has evolved through millions of years.”

“does not even have the basic appearances of a human being”

“a wicked black monkey”.

“Obama’s gut-wrenching, revolting facial features.”

“monkey climbing up this and that tree and scrounging up fruits on the ground,”

“it’s certain that Obama has slipped out of the body of a monkey,”

“he should live as a monkey in an African natural zoo licking the breadcrumbs thrown by spectators,”

Courtesy Joshua Stanton, One Free Korea.http://freekorea.us/#sthash.Fym8aNsU.dpbs

Other insults:

Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye : “vile prostitute,”  “senile granny,”  “tailless, old, insane bitch.”

President George W. Bush: “hooligan” who looked like “a chicken soaked in the rain.”

Vice President Dick Cheney:  “most cruel monster and blood-thirsty beast.”

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld: “political dwarf, human scum or hysteric.”

State John Kerry: “wolf with a hideous lantern jaw.”

So, back to President Trump’s tweet, the comments ranged from the predictable “Delete your account” and “Impeach Trump,” to the more light-hearted:

Okay, at this point I’m convinced Trump’s account has been hacked. Even he’s not this whacked out. Wait, yes he is.

I… I just… did you just have a stroke or something?

If he won’t take medication the only alternative is that the rest of us do until he goes away.

u ok hun? Xx

Seriously sir step off, go to bed, just breathe

Donald trump just called Kim jong-un short and fat on twitter…… we’re going 2 b blasted into smithereens, my god…

Symptoms of neurosyphilis Confusion, disorientation. Sudden personality changes. Changes in mental stability. Dementia. Depression

Kim Jong-un is living in Trump’s head rent-free

twitter in 2014: oh cool ellen took a selfie with a bunch of other celebrities twitter in 2017: the president just called kim jong-un fat

Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice, but the smart money is on Trump making momma-so-fat jokes at Kim Jong-un.

Remember when President Obama appeared on Between Two Ferns and conservatives said it was beneath the dignity of the office? Trump is currently fat shaming Kim Jong-un on Twitter….

trump: i’m friendly with russia because they’ll help us get on better terms with north korea trump 30 mins later: kim jong-un is short and fat

Trump is so pissed about Kim Jong-un calling him old that he has cancelled his date with Putin to watch “Golden Girls.”

Kim Jong-un went too far this time. Nukes are one thing, but ageism is something else entirely. The American people will not stand for discrimination against old people!

Kim Jong-un’s reply “Yo Potus so fat, it took me two trains, a plane, and a bus to get to his good side.”

Donald Trump just body shamed Kim Jong-un. Next he’s going to unfriend him on Facebook.

“Dear Kim Jong-Un, Do you like me? Circle one: YES NO Your friend (hopefully), Donny”

When you thought nothing could get stranger… Enter Trump saying he’s trying “hard to make friends with Kim Jong-Un”

Just so we’re clear… Our POTUS just “fat shamed” Kim Jong-Un AND called him a “Manlet” in the same tweet. THIS IS THE BEST TIME EVER FOR POLITICS!!!!

someone wrote this EXACT SAME THING in my 7th grade yearbook. Weird.

All I can say is… Kim Jong-Un needs to create a twitter

And finally, my personal favorite:

Never go full dotard.

Trump’s Granddaughter Arabella Prepares Video for Chinese Leaders

According to China NewsAsia, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, “As a little ambassador of Chinese-American friendship, Arabella has already received the love of a vast number of Chinese people.”

“This kind of special arrangement is actually very sweet and warm-hearted. We believe that this has helped to further bring closer the affection and distance between the Chinese and American people.”
